Worldcoin is an innovative digital identity initiative designed to establish a global identity and financial network that is inclusive of everyone. Launched in October 2021 by Alex Blania, Max Novendstern, and Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, the project seeks to be available to all individuals, regardless of their nationality, background, or economic standing. Tools for Humanity (TFH), a company founded by the same individuals in 2019, spearheaded the initial research and development for Worldcoin. The project’s grand objective was to create a universal currency, with an initial plan to distribute it to one billion people through AirDrop, potentially functioning as Universal Basic Income (UBI). However, the difficulty of differentiating between humans and online bots complicated the AirDrop process.
